Ten Hair Product Recommendations

I’ve wanted to do a post like this for awhile, but after visiting the beauty supply store today, and commenting on @lovelyisbest’s shampoo post I figured today would be a good day.

Product knowledge is something I always gobbled up in school and working in the salon. I LOVE hair product. So much so that I have more than I know what do do with and often give away stuff I don’t use. These are the best products that I’ve been using for the past few years, on myself and clients as well. (in no particular order) Most will be of the “professional” variety since it’s what I’ve had at my disposal, save for a few.

  1. Paul Mitchell Worked Up Styling Spray: This stuff is amazing for styling, it’s lightweight but still holds curl and works in a pinch as a thermal spray. (for use with a straightener) I love it because it doesn’t smell perfumey or strong like most other hairsprays. It kind of has a strawberry-ish scent and it’s so versatile.

  2. Aveda Be Curly Creme: If you have curly or wavy hair this stuff is magic. It defines and enhances without feeling crunchy and it smells fantastic. A little goes a long way, too.

  3. Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum: By far the best serum I’ve used on myself and others. It’s not sticky and thick like others, smells great (notice a trend here?) and helps reduce drying time if you put it in wet hair. The result is shiny, sexy hair with reduced frizz. Only downfall is that it’s a silicone based product, but I can’t live without my ‘cones so I suck it up.

  4. ABBA Pure Moisture Shampoo: Minty, moisturizing and fantastic. 100% vegan, sulfate, synthetic dye and DEA Free.

  5. Big Sexy Hair Root Pump:  Best root lifter on the market IMHO. If you haven’t tried a root lifter and have fine hair you should because it would wonders for volume without weighing down the ends.  They also have a Root pump plus version that has a stronger hold if you need it.

  6. Lush Godiva Shampoo Bar: Unpackaged, smells like jasmine blossoms, is super portable and gentle on the hair. This is my go-to travel shampoo and the cocoa butter in the bar makes going without conditioner not as bad as you’d think. Mostly vegan with the exception of Lanolin.

  7. Aveda Hair Potion: Amazing for volume and backcombing, this hair powder thickens hair and gives it that gritty texture at the root for better styling. It can be put in wet too, since it turns to liquid when agitated

  8. Pureology Nanoworks Hair Masque: I remember when this stuff came out, it was advertised to be an anti-aging treatment for your hair. At 60 bucks for a tiny pot I was skeptical, but after trying it all I have to say is, HOLY CRAP. If your hair is damaged this stuff will put you on track to healthy hair and fast. But the pricetag is a little much for me, even if I get it at cost. Oh, it’s vegan and mostly organic too.

  9. Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Mellow Mousse: This stuff just came out this year and I’m hooked. It conditions and provides hold when I blow dry, and reduces frizz when I air dry. It’s not a nice lemon-y scent and a little goes a long
    way.
  10. Pureology Texture Twist:  Also a little on the expensive side, but not as bad as nanoworks, this pliable styling creme is my go to for anyone with short -medium hair. It adds shine, texture and doesn’t weigh the hair down if you’re going for a messy/spikey look. It’s also great for defining ends, controlling fringe and curl. It even works for my friend who has a serious scent allergy, and is vegan and mostly organic.

There! I hope that was informative. Feel free to ask me any questions you have about hair products or anything, I’d love to answer.
