About Me
I’m Liz! (well, duh)
I’m 27 years old and currently attending the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. I’m in my 3rd year of an Arts degree in International Development, which is basically 4 years of learning about how the western world screwed over everyone else. On a good day I feel like I can change a small fraction of the world, the rest of the time I just feel sad for humanity. But I love it! Clearly I’m nuts.
I moved around a lot growing up, even lived in France for a bit when I was 8. My family is all over the place but Saskatchewan has been home for awhile now, and as much as I dislike the -40 degree winters that last for 8 months of the year, it’s still a pretty decent place to live.
I got engaged in August 2009, to a ridiculously smart, super handy and super cute boy named Ryan. He’s a software developer and mad scientist (the lab’s in our basement) who I met playing DDR at the arcade where he used to, and I currently work. We’ve known each other for about 8 years and have been dating for 3.5. We get asked all the time when we are getting married and we don’t really have a clue. Maybe we’ll elope in 2011.
Yes, I work in an arcade. It’s on campus and aside from the occasional disrespectful teenager, it’s a pretty OK place to work. We sell bubble tea and junk food which makes it REALLY hard to stay healthy, but I’m trying.
The end of 2009 was pretty rough for me, both academically and personally. I was at the highest weight of my life, unhappy, unfocused and considering dropping out of school. With the support of Ryan and my parents, I got through it, started going to the gym in the new year and I haven’t looked back since. I’m still not 100% in health mode yet. I still binge occasionally, choose pizza over a healthy meal and as a result it’s taken me almost 4 months to lose under 15lbs. However, what I’ve learnt in the past few months is that tomorrow is another day, muscle weighs more than fat and being healthy isn’t something that just happens overnight, it can take YEARS.
I’m leaving for South Africa on May 4th 2010 and I’m both terrified and excited to go. It’s a 5 week term abroad and I have a feeling my entire world view will be drastically different when I return.
